Suan Sunandha Highlights the Power of Innovation through “From Waste to Wonder,” Transforming Waste Materials into New Value for Sustainable Development

As part of the press conference on Thai inventions that received awards from an international competition, organized by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University was honored to participate in a panel discussion titled “From Waste to Wonder: Materials, Technology and Design for the Future.” The session provided a platform for exchanging knowledge on research, innovation, design, and value creation from resources and waste materials, as well as sharing experiences in developing research outputs that have gained international recognition.

During the panel discussion, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University presented four outstanding research and innovation works. The first was “Upcycling Banana Trunks into Fashion Enterprise: ITDO Model” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Phanuphatpanithipong, which transforms agricultural waste into fashion products, creating added value and enhancing the community economy.

The second work, “Modern KLA-Tex: Modern Circular Textile Innovation, Zero Waste from Wicker Scraps,” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosjana Chandhasa, is an environmentally friendly textile innovation developed under the concept of the circular economy. The project focuses on reducing waste and adding value to discarded materials from wickerwork.

The third work, “SiamCanvas: Thai Aesthetic Front Panel Innovation for Contemporary Air Conditioners,” by Asst. Prof. Dr. Palang Wongtanasuporn, is an innovative design for contemporary air conditioner front panels that integrates Thai artistic and cultural identity into commercial products. The innovation aims to create product differentiation, add value, and enhance the competitiveness of Thai products.

The fourth work, “AquaPulse,” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wanida Wonsawat, applies scientific and technological knowledge to develop an innovation that improves quality of life, addresses future utilization needs, and reflects the role of research in creating new solutions for society.

Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University’s participation in this panel discussion reflects its role as a higher education institution committed to driving research and innovation toward practical utilization. The university connects academic knowledge with economic, social, environmental, and creative design development, while promoting knowledge exchange and research and innovation networks with government agencies, educational institutions, and partner organizations both nationally and internationally.

The presentation of these four research outputs also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through the development of innovations that can be further applied in practice; SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, through the value-added use of waste materials and the application of the circular economy concept; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, through value creation for community products and the promotion of career opportunities; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through knowledge exchange and the establishment of research and innovation collaboration networks to advance sustainable development at both national and international levels.
